The ‘milkmaid braid’, epitomised in the ad campaign for Narcsico Rodriguez For Her featuring Carman Kass is constantly popping up all over the red carpet. But if you don't have the time or the inclination to spend hours braiding your hair into just the right plaited band, we have a shortcut for you.

This trick is especially good for thin or fine hair, since you aren’t taking your own hair out of circulation in order to create the headband.

You will need one, two or three (depending on the desired thickness) long hair extensions, in a shade that matches your hair. We used a 45-centimetre-long faux piece from the new Mita range.

Braid the extension all the way to the end and secure it tightly with a small clear elastic. Clip the end of the extension at the roots of your hair behind the ears (it may take a few tries to get the right angle for the headband to start from.) Then simply place the band into position, and bobby pin the other end twice behind your other ear, crossing the pins into an X shape. For larger headbands, you may also need a bobby pin at the centre.

And when you’ve finished showing off this chic look, there’s no need to unwind the braid or deal with the crimped aftermath - simply unclip and put your band away for future use.
