Here's another good reason to get your five plus a day – scientists at the University of St Andrews have proven that eating fruit and vegetables gives skin a golden glow.
The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, looked at how carotenoid pigments found in fruit and vegetables affected skin colour. It found that eating two extra portions of fruit and vegetables led to a change in skin tone within just six weeks, making the complexion more golden.
How does this happen? The orangey-red pigments of the foods' carotenoids are transported in the blood system and deposited under the skin.
