Transforming Jennifer Lawrence into her character for The Hunger Games didn't come cheap, reportedly costing filmmakers US$30,000 (NZ$36,000) to turn the blonde actress brunette.

The 21-year-old starlet, who plays Katniss Everdeen, refused to let stylists experiment with her naturally blonde hair, demanding they experiment with wigs instead.

Linda Flowers, head hair designer for movie, explained to beauty website BellaSugar: "I rented $30,000 of hair of all different shades of brown, from light brown to brown with a little bit of red in it.

"It made Jennifer comfortable that we weren't going to experiment with her colour."

Once Jennifer was happy with the final shade, she then allowed Flowers to dye her hair for the role.

Katniss' signature hairstyle was based on descriptions in the original Hunger Games novel, but Flowers revealed it wasn't just for aesthetic purposes.

"It was a functional braid that someone who hunts would wear," she continued. "The hair had to be contained at the nape, I didn't just want to do a braid so I started it at one end and I did a reverse French braid all around it, to hug her neck and come around."
