A thick fringe of jet black eyelashes is the perfect accent to smoky eyes. But if you weren’t born with lush lashes, there are plenty of ways to achieve them with a little help from your beauty cabinet.

1. Lash-intensifying mascaras. No need to choose between length or volume – many of the latest wands do both. L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes, $35.99, is my favourite. Also worth a look are double-ended mascaras that have a thickening primer on one end and a mascara on the other, such as Model Co Fibre Lashes, $51.

2. False eyelashes. For a more natural look, snip a full line of eyelashes in half and apply just to the outer corners of your eye. QVS have a great selection. For more dramatic, fun looks try the UBU range of wild faux eyelashes. Use a glue that dries clear and apply as close to the lash line as possible.

3. Lash extensions. Beauty salons and specialist lash bars offer extensions that are glued on individually to your existing eyelashes. Like hair extensions, these can damage your natural hair so it pays to shop around for a quality operator.

4. Lash growth serums. Lilash, around $200, is available at selected salons and spas and Latisse, $300, can only be obtained with a prescription (it’s offered at many appearance medicine clinics). Both options are pricey but do get results.
